Support for you

You can begin before you have the words.

There may be one concern on your mind, or several things that have become difficult to sort through. You might be managing a change, feeling worn down by daily demands, or noticing that familiar patterns no longer work for you. An inquiry about therapy can start with a simple question about support.

Kimberly Boatner, LCSW, CADC, provides individual therapy at her St. Charles office. Her existing approach emphasizes compassion, personal strengths, and collaboration. An initial conversation is a chance to ask whether the practice fits what you are looking for.

What would you like space to talk about?

You do not have to choose a perfect category. Questions people bring to individual counseling may involve:

  • Feeling overwhelmed by responsibilities or expectations.
  • Worry, low mood, self-doubt, or emotional changes.
  • A loss, transition, or shift in identity and priorities.
  • Relationships, communication, and personal boundaries.
  • Uncertainty about a decision or the direction of daily life.

These are starting points for a conversation, not a checklist you need to meet or a diagnosis.

Make the first conversation useful to you

Ask about Kimberly’s background, her approach to concerns like yours, and how goals are discussed. You can also ask practical questions about appointment times, session format, and cost before deciding to schedule.

If you are unsure where to begin, a sentence such as “I have been having a difficult time and would like to ask about an appointment” is enough for an initial inquiry. The office can explain how to arrange an appropriate conversation about more personal details.

For a general starting point, read questions to consider when choosing a therapist.

Questions before beginning individual therapy

Do I need to know exactly what I want to work on?

No. You can describe what prompted you to reach out and ask how a first appointment would begin. The discussion of goals can start there.

Can I ask about therapy if relationships are part of the concern?

Yes. Relationship concerns can be part of an individual inquiry. If you are considering attending with a partner or family member, ask about couples or family therapy as well.

How many appointments would I need?

The number and frequency of appointments depend on individual circumstances. Ask Kimberly how those decisions would be discussed rather than expecting a fixed course from a website.

Can I ask about online appointments?

Yes. Confirm current telehealth availability and whether it is appropriate for your circumstances and location before scheduling.
